BI Apps for iPad

mobile-bi-ipadComputing ecosystem is changing with new gadgets and application based environment. Smartphones and tablet pcs have occupied prime slot of the digital world. The same is getting in to enterprise computing scenario. We covered Mobile BI in ExpertsTown a few months back. In this article, let us see some Business Intelligence Apps that are making waves. Only a handful of them are currently being tried. However there is a lot of interest by vendors and they are expected to come out with more apps for enterprise use in near future. It is increasingly becoming an app world with an explosion in app stores (News from Gartner: Mobile apps to generate $15 billion in 2011) and definitely worth taking a deep look!

Apple iPad is claimed to be the revolutionary product changing the way of computing. It is setting new standard in delivering content to mobile work force around the world. As at the beginning of the year 2011, just in excess of 10 billion apps have been downloaded from Apple App Store. Apple App Store was started in the year 2008. In the whole year of 2010, 7 billion apps have been downloaded. App store concept is revolutionising the way software is created, discovered, distributed, sold and used. This should be an innovating experience for the practice of BI too.

Business Intelligence iPad Apps

  • BIRT Mobile viewer: Actuate leads the Eclipse BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) open source project. BIRT is the premier development environment to present data visualizations in compelling ways via the web on any device. Actuate products add interactivity, dashboards, analytics, and deployment options for web and mobile applications. BIRT Mobile Viewer and BIRT onDemand BIRT iServer, which generates and runs BIRT content on different devices in a secure manner and according to a schedule, enable users of the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad to view and work with BIRT content anywhere. This is one of the earliest tools available for Apple iPad.
  • Mellmo: Roambi by MellMo is one of the impressive iPad apps in the BI space. Roambi Enterprise Server by MeLLmo integrates with most BI platforms and data warehouses. It also enables analysis of data from the iPhone or iPad. Users can select up to five dimensions of raw data to generate visualizations that are delivered to a mobile device. Roambi interactive dashboards are not only being used by enterprises but now Governmental organizations are using them.
  • Qlikview for ipad HD: QlikView for iPad provides mobile professionals with access to decision-critical business intelligence information through an intuitive touch interface. Built from the ground up to support the Apple iPad’s native multi-touch interface, QlikView for iPad takes mobile business intelligence to a new level of touch-based interactivity, enabling free form exploration of business data without the limits of static reporting. With QlikView for iPad, business users on the go can access the exact BI information they need, when they need it.

There are so many apps being developed and expected to come out in near future. Microstrategy, SAP Business Objects, SAS Mobile, LogicXML, IBM Cognos Go Mobile are some of them. Tablet pcs like Apple iPad have the exact features like touch screen interface which are perfect fits for BI applications interactivity with the user. Adoption rates of these BI apps are expected to soar in near future.

    Thanx for this nice sum up – but unfortunately there is missing the most innovative (from our point of view ;-) ) mobile BI system which is “miReport”.

    miReport is totally based on HTML5 but looks and feels like a native iPad application. We have a backend mapper which enables you to push Excel exports (or directly targeting backend systems) to mobile devices instantly.

    Would be great if you could checkout miReport as well and maybe suggest to add miReport to the list of mobile BI systems listed within your article…
