Golf: a lucrative business

It is not surprising that professional golf players regularly make the top lists of the richest sports people on the globe. They are in a sport that offers prize money that is frankly shocking to most people. You can earn hundreds of thousands of pounds for playing a few rounds of golf without even considering what happens to those who wins the tournament outright. Golf is a very rich sport and the fascination for entrepreneurs is to work out how they too can get a piece of the cake given the fact the sport is likely to grow in stature and coverage over the coming years. This article will highlight some of the business opportunities that have been exploited through associations to the sport.

More than the sport

When a professional golf player collects his paycheck at the end of a tournament he will be aware that that is just a small fraction of the money that he will have earned throughout the tournament. When he buys a snack or goes to a restaurant that is a small fraction of the amount of money that he would have spent throughout the event. Golf is not about the headline figures that the press touts out in wonder from time to time. It is about the big deals that may occur outside the prying eyes of the public but which deals can create considerable wealth. Even national governments are in on the game and will create special tax regimes to attract the professional players. They may decide that the money they will eventually spend far outweighs any additional tax that they would like to impose. This is not a false promise but one based on the pragmatism borne out of experience.

The golf players will earn a significant amount of money from sponsors who pay them to advertise their products. The understanding is that we tend to idolize sports stars and when they recommend that we buy something, we will consider their opinion in our purchasing decision. They also believe that the publicity generated by the presence of a major celebrity in an advertising campaign will significantly increase the publicity that the products on offer enjoy. This widens the market base and ensures a steady revenue stream for the clever entrepreneur. The players could also earn appearance fees if they are considered to be marquee players on a certain circuit. All this combines to create an individual wealth that significantly exceeds that available to other less well known sports. No matter how frugal they are, the spending habits of the sportsmen will ensure that the economy benefits from this abundance of wealth.

The organization and execution of a golf event involves a multiplicity of people and organizations right from the transportation to the event management to the catering facilities. This is real economic activity that pumps much needed money into the financial system. It also provides an occupation and sometimes permanent careers for people who work within the golf industry. Thus the lucrative nature of the sport of golf goes as far as macroeconomics.
