Types of golf clubs

A golf club is one of the equipments used in the golf game. This club is used to hit the golf ball. It is one of the vital equipment and we can say golf can never be played without a club. Club has a shaft with grip and a club head. The shaft will be long mostly made of wood and the club head is small and will be heavy usually made of metal.

Golf clubs can be differentiated based on the angle between the club’s face and the shaft (vertical plane). The angle is called as loft. This loft is the main key in making the golf ball leave out of the tee on ascending trajectory manner. Even though hitting a golf ball in the right trajectory depends on the swing action of the player, loft plays more important role than the swing action.

There are three types of clubs:

  • Woods
  • Irons
  • Putters

Each club is designed specifically to be used for a particular type of shot. Some are designed for accuracy and some for long distance.

Woods

Woods are used for hitting long distance and this will be used for tee shots. This type of club is designed for power hitting. They have a large head and large shaft. Large shaft ensures better grip and large head is for enforcing more power on the ball.

Woods are typically made of a wood called persimmon. But, some manufacturers now use laminated wood. A wood club doesn’t mean that it is made of wood. This name is chosen to denote its usage and general shape. In fact most wood clubs are made of metals. Now, manufacturers have started using carbon fiber, titanium or scandium.

Irons

Irons come with many varieties and they can be used for variety of shots. They have short angled flat face and the length of the shaft is lower than a wood club. This type has got the name ‘iron’ because they are originally made of iron. Irons are designed for shots on difficult places like bushes, trees or on rough surfaces.

Putters

Putters are for short distance hits or for rolling the ball. Putters have the loft not more than 10 degrees. An exception of this criterion is a chipper. Chippers are used for low speed swings and to make the ball travel for short distance of about 25 yards. Putters can have two striking faces provided they are identical on both the sides.

Apart from these three basic types we have hybrid types too. Hybrid clubs are made between a wood and iron. These clubs can be used to get both distance as a wood and swing as an iron.

Grips are wrapped around the top of the shaft and make it easier for the player to hold the club. According to the rules of this game, every grip should have circular cross-section. Putters alone can be exempted from this rule. Grips come with minor texture variations and player can chose the texture which suits his need.
