Ask anyone about wines and they will all tell you one common thing that a wine gets better with age. It is said that a wine tastes better and gets more valuable with age. Wine connoisseurs, investors and just avid drinkers of wine will have you believe that storing away wine in a cellar and forgetting about it will do the bottle of wine a whole deal of good. This may not be true at all times and for all situations.
The ageing issue is simply overrated. It is known that more than half the wines produced in the world should not be allowed to get old before they are consumed. More specifically a white wine should not be very old when it is drunk. A white wine can spoil with time. So, if you have a white wine then unscrew it and consume it. Do not let it lie in the wine storage while you wait for it to age and taste great. Red wines are more agreeable to ageing.
There are many wines which can be allowed to get old before they are drunk. The list is long and not all the wines can be mentioned here so this list is rather incomplete. But a few of the most commonly used wines are mentioned here. Wines which age well include:
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Port Wines
- Rieslings from Germany
- Red Bordeaux
- Certain Reserve Chiantis from Tuscany
If you have any of these wines lying with you in your wine storage or wine cellar then let them sit a couple of more years before you have a sip of them. Of this group of wines Bordeaux wines are considered to age the best. They taste wonderful and also get very expensive as they age. It wasn’t long ago when a proud new father in France would buy a Bordeaux wine when his child was born and drink it only on his 21st birthday. These wines can be left to age for years to together without worrying about them spoiling or going bad.
Wine aficionados are big fans of storing the putting away wines for years. There is a misconception that the wine will eventually taste better. But if the wine drinker is not aware that certain wines like a few white wines can spoil with age he might end up drinking a spoilt wine without even knowing it. Also when you suddenly have someone over, do not hesitate to unscrew that bottle of expensive wine you bought just recently. You have to make the most of what you have for the present. By waiting for your wines to age and taste better you might be losing out on the present especially when you want to celebrate a special occasions with your near and dear ones.
So whenever you buy a bottle of wine do not do so with the idea of storing it or putting it away for some time to come. It is not a bad idea to indulge in some present pampering by having and enjoying the wine just now.
