Wine Making For Fun and Flavor

winemaking-processAs one of the most historically significant beverages in the world, wine holds a special place in the hearts of many people. For a select few, the ancient art form of wine making can take their appreciation and love of the liquid to a whole otherlevel, resulting in amazing and delicious results. Though there have been many scientific advances in winemaking, that havebeen adopted by larger vintners that produce vast quantities of wine every year, the basicprocess of making wine has remained largely unchanged for the last nine thousand or so years.

The first, and to many people the most important step in wine making is in choosing your grapes. Although wine can be made by fermenting other types of fruit and even some vegetables, most people are more familiar with and tend to focus in more on wine made from grapes. There are many different types of grapes around the world. Like apples which can range in flavor from green and extremely tart to bright red and sugary sweet, there is a wide range of sweetness and color in grapes. The grapes that you use will determine the character of the wine that you produce.

Wine grapes

Grapes are grown in almost every country in the world, with the soil itself impacting the flavor of the resultant wine as well. Not every person that attempts to try their hand at wine making will have the facilities to grow their own grapes, but it is OK, for grapes are typically available in fairly abundant supply. Wine grapes differ from the grapes that you typically see in a grocery store though, so don’t plan to buy a bunch from the fruit aisle, bring them home and whip up a bottle of chardonnay. Wines are named for the grapes from which they are made, and it is pretty rare that you see a bottle of “white seedless”.

Once you have selected and obtained your grapes, there are some simple pieces of equipment that you can purchase, which will make the wine making process a bit smoother and more successful. Though the basic process has remained unchanged, there has been a lot learned since 6000BC, which has greatly improved the taste and success of making wine. While you don’t necessary need to buy the more expensive and elaborate equipment in order to make wine, there is also no reason to turn back the process by thousands of years.
